Safety House Smoke Alarms
It is important to think of a smoke alarm, or smoke detector, as another layer in your home security system. Whilst a smoke alarm will obviously not stop intruders, it has potentially an even greater role to play – saving you and your families lives. Unfortunately, many victims of fires are actually killed not by the fire, but by smoke inhalation.
Whilst smoke alarms may be required by law in certain areas, it is important that, even if not legally needed, every home should install one. They can be bought very cheaply, and are easy to install. You should make sure that whichever system you decide to buy, it carries the Authorisation Stamp relevant to your area.
It is important to remember that although hard wired systems can be purchased, most tend to run on batteries, which will at some point run out. Therefore regular checking of the batteries in all the smoke detectors within your home will make sure that they are working when you are likely to need them most. A good way of remembering this is when you change your clocks in Spring and Fall, change your batteries. Also, smoke alarms do not last forever, so if you have one that is over 10 years old, it is probably a good idea to replace it as soon as possible.
You should also clean your alarm regularly. This can be done with a soft bristle brush Vacuum cleaner attachment.
This depends on many things, not least the size of your property. In most properties an alarm should be placed in every bedroom, as well as in hall areas near the bedrooms. As smoke rises, it is important to also have a smoke detector on the ground floor of your home. You should make everybody aware of the noise your smoke alarm will make when it is activated, so that they are familiar with it in case of emergency. Ideally once everyone is aware of the sound of the alarm, you should work out potential escape routes in case of emergency. Every room should have two escape routes that can be used. These would normally be the door and window. Window ladders can be purchased if the window escape route is dangerous looking.
